A sweet, quiet and considered coming of age story. Scout as a second grader watches her father Atticus, and her brother Jem, and her housekeeper Calpurnia live and react to the trial of Tom Johnson, a young black man accused of rape. Her clearly defined childish world slowly becomes filled with shades of grey as she watches and participates in the long hot summer of Tom's trial. Nuanced, subtle, and marvelous.

I loved the scene when she takes refuge with her friend Dill from the traumas of the courthouse. Dill is overcome with the horror and unfairness of it all. He is restored by the notorious town 'drunk' offering him a sip out of his 'brown bag.' Turns out the town drunk only drank Coke, but the brown bag gave the towns people something to focus on other than his long time live-in relationship with a black woman. The entire book is filled with such gentle moments of people just trying to live right in an impossible situation.

Harper Lee's coming of age novel has hit a raw nerve for over 50 years.
