Fifteen-year-old Alex and his three friends start an evening´s mayhem by hitting an old man, tearing up his books and stripping him of money and clothes.
Or rather Alex and his three droogs tolchock an old veck, razrez his books, pull off his outer platties and take a malenky bit of cutter.
For Alex´s confessions are written in "nadsat" - the teenage argot of a not-too-distant-future.
Because of his delinquent excesses, Alex is jailed and made subject to "Ludovico´s Technique", a chilling experiment in Reclamation Treatment.
Horro farce? Social prophecy? Penetrating study of human choice between good and evil? A Clockwork Orange is all three, dazzling proof of Anthony Burgess´ vast talents.

It´s been some time since I read it - but I remember that I found the language hard to follow.

SPOILER....
Once I figured out what most of the language meant I actually became bored with the book. Yes, it was disturbing, and I don't think I ever want to see the movie, but trying to figure out what the heck Alex was saying was half the fun for me. I was disappointed that the treatment was reversible and that the fall didn't kill him and HIGHLY disappointed with the ending. What, did Burgess run out of time? What kind of cheap out was that ending?

I'm glad I can finally say I have knowledge behind the story but I don't think I'll have any interest in reading the story again.

Thanks for letting me take part in this bookring though!

I thought A Clockwork Orange was great. The language was a bit cumbersome at first, but once you got used to it, it flowed nicely. I especially liked Burgess's commentary on free choice.

Thanks for the opportunity to read this book, trygvasson. I am sending it off to simietta in Italy today.

The movie is one of my faves, so I absolutely enjoyed this book. The language was difficult to understand at the
beginning, but once you get into it it all makes sense.

sorry for the late release but boy was this a busy summer!

I got to like page 35 and I just decided that I won't try to read the whole book. I think the main character is disgusting and since I have my studies as well, I think I should be passing this forward. I really didn't enjoy this book. I haven't seen the movie either, but I don't think I will try that either. First it was fun to try to figure out all the words, but since I know Russian, it wasn't too hard although the way they were written really mixed me up. It's a bit like trying to figure out which American actors a Russian text is talking about when you don't understand the way they write them.

Even though I didn't like this one I want to thank trygvasson for sharing it. Now I don't have to wonder if I might like it or not. I'll send this forward as soon as I get the next person's address.

Not bad; better than I was expecting. It also has to be the most straight up book to film adaptation Kubrick ever made.

I didn't think it did the teen parlance as well as Catcher in the Rye or the numerous Georgia Nicolson books do but it was still entertaining reading Alex's version of things and him not realizing just how stupid he sounded. The plot line is a bit like Flowers for Algernon so the ending didn't really suprise me. I did enjoy Alex running into one of his old droogs and finding him all grown up.
