The sequel to The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, but only in the loosest sense - it's set in the same alternative history universe, but is centred around Simon, a minor character in the first book, and the protagonists of that book barely get a mention in this one. And there's a new character introduced in a way that makes you think she's not a new character at all, which had me skimming back through the first book to see if I'd missed a mention of her somewhere. At least the alternative history that's ignored in the first book plays a role in this book, finally justifying its existence.

I'm not sure what age group this book is aimed at - the writing style is the same as that of the earlier book, simplistic with lots of unlikely adventures, which makes me think it's for younger readers, but the main character is in his late teens, and there's a thread of dark political intrigue which weaves through it, so it almost seems like the author was trying to write for older children.

Very odd. But still kind of fun.
