This book was bought from a charity shop or second hand book stall. It is a paperback showing signs of age but still well readable.

From the cover:- "Betty Mahmoody amd her husband Dr. Sayeed Bozorg Mahmoody ('Moody'), came to Iran from the USA to meet Moody's family. With them was their four year old daughter Mahtob. Appalled by the squalor of their living conditions, horrified by what she saw of a country were women are merely chattels, and Westerners are despised, Betty soon became desparate to return to the States. But Moody, and his often vicious family, had other plans. Mother and daughter became prisoners of an alien culture, hostages of an increasingly tyrannical and violent man.

Eventually Betty was given the name of a man who would plan their perilous route out of Iran, a journey that few women or children had ever made. Their nightmare attempt to return home began in a bewildering snowstorm...."

REVIEW:- This was a story that kept me on the edge of my seat and brought me to tears more than once. It is an amazing tale of bravery and determination against the odds. I felt so sorry for Betty and her daughter for the despicable way in which they were treated. At the same time I learnt a lot about every day life in Iran back in the 1980s. It made me extremely grateful to live in a free country. A very well written book."
I am now reserving the book for my husband and also for Snoopy 56.

My husband has also read this book and comments as follows:-
"A very intriguing story. A good insight into life in Iran. I was pleased that the author and her daughter managed to escape to safety"

Unfortunately the book itself has seen better days so won't be suitable for wild release but I am reserving it for Snoopy56 and also for my sister-in-law C who I'm sure will also enjoy it.

I was vaguely aware of this story, possibly from when the film came out, although I've never seen it. Looking forward to reading this.
