from the cover:

"In the autumn of 1940, Russian emigre journalist I. A. Serebin is recruited in Istanbul by an agent of the British secret services for a clandestine operation to stop German importation of Romanian oil - a last desperate attempt to block Hitler's conquest of Europe. Serebin's race against time begins in Bucharest and leads him to Paris, the Black Sea, Beirut, and, finally Belgrade; his task is to attack the oil barges that fuel German tanks and airplanes. Blood of Victory is a novel with the heart-pounding suspense, extraordinary historical accuracy, and narrative immediacy we have come to expect from Alan Furst."

Is it odd that I appreciate the fact that sometimes the plans don't work out the way they should? There are multiple clandestine operations in each of Alan Furst's books and sometimes they work, and sometimes they don't. It would be too unrealistic if they always went smoothly and flawlessly. Also, it amps up the suspense. Reading books like these, often we pretend that we're concerned about whether the plan will work or the character get away when really, we know they will because the book will wrap up tidily. But with Furst I really don't know. It's much more fun that way.
