Oh dear oh dear oh dear. I don’t know what to say to this. Clearly there was something compelling because it kept me reading and I finished it, but, … I don’t know. Okay, here goes. So this book had a good and compelling plot, with a well-designed world populated by interesting and clever characters. But maybe it’s because the author is more used to making TV series, but it felt SO clumsily written. I know it’s an uncorrected proof, which explained the mistakes and could even explain the plot oddities and errors, but really, has this guy never heard of show-don’t-tell? There are long, long explanatory passages, and he seems so intent on letting you know what each character is thinking—all the time—that he never lets the action happen, never lets you form your own opinions about them. And even the way they talk is rather too unnatural. It’s like he’s trying to harp on the lesson, the moral, the right-and-wrong in everything that they do. Perhaps also, he should have included less characters but developed them a little better. Like Queen Amelie—what? She just came across as a weak cut-out. It’s hard to believe she could be that deluded for fifteen years, and not just offed the evil king in his sleep. All in all a good story, but not good writing. I was a bit surprised by this.
