Based on a specific historical incident, the author has made a wonderful novel. Set in 1665-6, the year plague came to a small mining village, this is the story of a town that got plague, and quarrantined itself. The main character, Anna, starts off the year as a new widow with 2 young sons. She is getting by after the death of her husband in a mining accident. And then a lodger she takes in brings the plague.
Interesting development of charaters throughout the book. We fall half in love with the Rector's wife, Elinor, and the Rector himself. We are amazed as Anna slowly finds the strength within herself to face the challenges of everyday n a plague village, and keep going. Eventually, the plague dies out, along with much of the village, but those who remain alive are changed forever. Some, like Anna manage to grow and thrive. Fly far little book!
