Brighton, 1950: a seedy seaside resort in the grip of post-war austerity, pea-souper fogs, and now murder...
When the body of a girl is found cut into three, DI Edgar Stephens recalls a magic trick called the Zig Zag Girl. Its inventor, Max Mephisto, served with Edgar in the war as part of a shadowy unit called the Magic Men.
Max is still on the circuit, touring seaside towns in the company of bad comedians and dancing girls. Reluctant to get involved, Max changes his mind when the dead girl turns out to be his former stage assistant. Another gruesome death soon follows - and this time both Max and Edgar know the victim.
Then Edgar receives a letter warning of another 'trick' to come. The Wolf Trap is the deadliest illusion of all, but who will be the target?

Quite different to the Ruth Galloway series but still enjoyable and I didn't guess the perpetrator. Would be happy to read more Stephens & Mephisto tales.

It may not be set in Norfolk - which is why I read Elly Griffith's earlier series - but I think I like Edgar Stephens and Max Mephisto better! I liked the period details and the back story very much, and I will be looking out for more. Thank you Tanamo.

I really enjoyed this book, it was just as good as the Ruth Galloway series. I did guess the "baddie" about three quarters of the way through, but I wasn't sure.
I will be lending this to a friend who will pass it back to me when she has finished with it.

Well I'm glad to say I enjoyed this as much as the Ruth Galloway series. From the start I enjoyed the story, the characters & the humour. While I had worked out the baddie early on I was still nicely surprised by one of the other revelations. Will be happy to read more in this series :o)

I think I'm going to love this series. Really enjoyed this new cast of characters & the evocative atmosphere of 1950s Brighton. Very clever plotting & well paced. Have ordered the 2nd in the series, Smoke & Mirrors.

Thanks again, Plum!
