This is the fictionalized story of a relationship, a marriage, a family, but most of all, a deep love between a man and a woman. In this case it is Sophia Peabody and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Both were artists...he, the famed writer of such works as "The Scarlet Letter" and "Twice-Told Tales," and she, an artist of paints and sculpture. In her great love for him and their children, her art is set aside, but continues to inspire him.
Names of the time are sprinkled liberally throughout since they ran in famous circles. Emerson, Thoreau, Franklin Pierce, and more are all there, yet it is their love story and their lives together than make the story.
