Another Margaret Yorke story about a kind, gentle woman who is victimized and finally killed. Yorke really has a knack for understanding the small lives of the meek.

This is the third Margaret Yorke crime novel I have read, and I am shocked that she is not nearly as well know as her fellow Brit crime writers, Ruth Rendell and P.D. James. Yorke has a knack of not simply writing a good crime story, but having an emotional element that is often not in this type of writing.
In this story a woman, Louise escapes the heavy hand of her bullying husband. He has never physically harmed her but by intimidation and cruelty has kept her meek and frightened under his rule. Turns out that he is also being controlled by further forces.
Louise has inherited a small cottage, a distance away in another small village, and there she starts a life anew, with friendships and activities that were always disallowed by her vile husband. Slowly the real Louise starts to emerge from her shell, but there is still the fear her husband will find her.
Yorke's writing is precise, sharp and very English, and she creates characters that evoke empathy. (less)

Agree, vanbiohazard!
Well written novel. Yorke draws us into the lives of her characters, all 'ordinary' people, whether sad, desperate, unrepentant, or evil. And leaves us thoughtful.

Enjoyed the characters in this my first Margaret Yorke. Louise and Dorothy are both types of older lady you can meet any day down the street. I've met a Louise who was fortunate enough to be able to pull herself out of her miserable life. This Louise' bequest comes a little too late. Dorothy can still manage to run her life but knows that it wouldn't take much to bring her family down on her with all sorts of helpful solutions, so she hides what difficulties she does have. Colin, Louise' husband is a self centred bully, always blaming others when life doesn't give him what he wants. Even little Nicky, the journalist's son is a clear character. Very good indeed.
