I picked this copy up from the Evanston Public Library as part of National Endowment for the Arts The Big Read program of which this is one of the selection titles. I thought it looked fantastic so grabbed a copy.
This is what the Library says of their "The Big Read" program:

Nayeli and her friends have left their home in the Saldaigo, Mexico on a "mission from God". When desperadoes invade their city, the five friends are inspired by the movie The Magnificent Seven and set out to find seven protectors for their home. The five friends leave home together to try and sneak across the border into the United States to find Mexican ex-soldiers and policemen to bring back to rescue their homes. Nayeli has an ulterior motive, to get to Kankakee, IL and find her father who had gone north several years earlier.
I was drawn into the story. I did not expect to finish it this week as I'm only having relaxing reading on my commute. However, I found myself wanting to know what would happen next. when the book ended I wanted to know what happened next. These are all signs of a fantastically engaging story line.
