From paperbackswap.com:
With its gracious homes and tree-lined streets, Ansley Park is one of Atlanta's most desirable neighborhoods. But in one gleaming mansion, in a teenager's lavish bedroom, a girl has been savagely murdered. And in the hallway, her horrified mother stands amid shattered glass, having killed her daughter's attacker with her bare hands.
Detective Will Trent of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is here only to do a political favor; the murder site belongs to the Atlanta police. But Trent soon sees something that the cops are missing, something in the trail of blood, in a matrix of forensic evidence, and in the eyes of the shell-shocked mother. Within minutes, Trent is taking over the case -- and adding another one to it. He is sure that another teenage girl is missing, and that a killer is on the loose.

Armed with only fleeting clues, teamed with a female cop who has her own personal reasons for hating him, Trent has enemies all around him -- and a gnawing feeling that this case, which started in the best of homes, is cutting quick and deep through the ruins of perfect lives broken wide-open: where human demons emerge with a vengeance.

I know it's just the second installment in this series, but damn, I am hooked. This one truly blew me away. It starts as a mom interrupts a horrible crime and quickly escalates. The author draws us in as Will Trent is brought in on a crime scene and quickly turns it on its head. We are also given some better glimpses into Will's background - through his eyes as well as through the eyes of a fellow foster child. The author deals with some intense issues - learning disabilities, child abuse, pedophilia - if you've read any of the previous novels in the Grant County or Will Trent series, these will be familiar. The themes are tough to read about, but KS does a great job of dealing with them in a realistic, but not sensational, way.

Thank you so much for sharing your books with me. I am so blessed. I have only read one book by this author, so I am looking forward to it. I will donate to your team at Saint Jude. I lost my niece to stomach cancer. She was 26. I know that Saint Jude does good work.

Journal Entry 10 by wingbooklady331wing at Cape Coral, Florida USA on Saturday, August 6, 2022
This is Book two in the series. It is about a murder and kidnapping, but also it is about character development of Will Trent. We learn much more about his background, his coping mechanisms, and his worries about it all coming crashing down. Haven been a teacher who specialized in student s with learning disabilities, I am finding Will interesting.

In this book Will is brought to the scene of a murder by his boss Amanda. The victims are the family of a very wealthy man with the governor’s ear who brings calls in the GBI even though this should be an Atlanta PD case. Complicating matters is that Will has recently closed a case exposing dirty cops so he is not well liked by the cops. Amanda partners him with the detective daughter of the captain who was forced to retire because of the scandal. The elder wonders why.

The way the crime story unfolds is riveting. The pieces coming together, the twists and turns. Lots of examination of how Will’s secret impacts his ability to do his job. The reader wonders what is Amanda’s motivation in this pairing.

Faith Martin, Will’s partner on the case, is also an interesting character. I am looking forward to how their partnership is going to develop.
