One mild summer evening Lily and her husband are enjoying a meal while their baby daughter sleeps peacefully in her pram beneath a maple tree. But when Lily steps outside she is paralysed with terror. The child is bathed in blood. Inspector Sejer is called to the hospital to meet the family. Mercifully, the baby is unharmed, but her parents are deeply shaken, and Sejer spends the evening trying to comprehend why anyone would carry out such a sinister prank. Then, just before midnight, his doorbell rings. The corridor is empty, but the caller has left a small grey envelope on the mat. From his living room window, the inspector watches a figure slip across the car park and disappear into the darkness. Inside the envelope Sejer finds a postcard bearing a short message. Hell begins now.

Review
Another in the excellent Inspector Sejer series. In this book a young man, Johnny Beskow, is playing tricks on people. Living with his alcoholic mother who he loathes, Beskow has taken to spying on local people & putting them through ordeals which rock their lives; a young couple find their baby covered in blood but mercifully unharmed, a woman who recently celebrated her 70th birthday reads her own obituary in the local paper & a dying man has an undertaker calling to collect his body. The scenes are set with an insight into the victims life & then followed through with the different ways people react to these cruel & malicious pranks. I found it all very credible, but as to the tale of the little wanna-be explorer, well that was just heart breaking.

An excellent read though to my mind lacking the double twist described on the back cover, after all one of the events, the death of Beskow's grandfather wasn't unexpected. Though I was left wondering who did let the dogs out.......
