For some reason, I thought this book would be more specifically about the author's relationship with each of her parents. It was actually about her decision to travel around the world after college. After running out of money, she and her friend got jobs as nannies in Australia. While living with her employers, she sees how their family functions and how they cope with loss (the mother has died, leaving behind her husband and their two children in addition to her father and an older son from a previous marriage).
As is typical of a young adult, she is still rebelling against her upbringing but living with another family gives her some perspective and makes her appreciate her own family.
This memoir mostly covers the four months she spent as a nanny in Australia in the spring of 1992, so it was fun to remember the songs and current events of the day as she remembers what was happening at the time. One detail I had to nitpick: she mentions the little girl shoving her Beauty and the Beast videotape into the VCR (and she later says that she learned all the songs from the movie as a result of the little girl watching this movie incessantly), but that movie was released in theaters in November 1991 and didn't come out on video until October 1992. She was with this family from February through June 1992, so I have no idea how they could have been watching Beauty and the Beast at home unless the dad bought a bootleg version filmed on someone's camcorder.
