I was very torn between whether this was a 9 or a 10 but as it brought a tear to my eye and gave me the book tingles (technical term for the feeling you get upon finishing a book and wanting to start reading it again immediately), I decided to overlook the fact that it is a little overly verbose in places and plump for a 10!

I saw the film version at the cinema when it was first released so there were no major plot surprises here for me, it tells the story of a young aspiring writer and the events of one particularly hot day where she witnesse something she doesn't understand and the far reaching consequences of this. Told very cleverly using stories within stories it is a slow burn and build up to a conclusion I'm sure some people wouldn't enjoy but that I found perfect.

The ultimate tale of the power of the human imagination used to both its best and its worst.

When Briony sees her older sister Cecilia strip off her clothes and plunge into the fountain in front of the charlady's son Robbie, whose education is being sponsored by her parents, her misinterpretation leads to a chain of events which will blight all of their lives. A clever plot and well told as I've come to expect from McEwan. The last chapter both changed how I felt about the whole book and also felt somehow inevitable. Worth reading with much to say about honesty and relationships.

This is not the first book I read from this author. Many years ago I read “On Chesil Beach”, but I don’t remember if I liked it or not.

This book felt like a task to get through. I saw on Goodreads that the book was slow to get into and took up pace after 100 pages. So in the first half I kept waiting for something to happen. And then indeed something happens and there were about 20 pages where I thought the book was great... but then it lost pace again and I had to crawl through the pages. I specifically dreaded reading about Bobbie Turner’s life as a soldier in the second world war.

I know that the author was trying to set a certain atmosphere and I’m sure other readers will be more appreciative. For me, it felt too atmospheric and too little story.
