Taken from the Little Free Library on Maple St. in Arroyo Grande, CA today.

Beautifully written small book about memory, essentially. The narrator, Tony Webster, takes us through his childhood friendship with three other boys, into college, then skips through his marriage, family, career, and into his present older age.

Tony seems satisfied with his life and says exactly that. It hasn't been a great story but it's good. But there were incidents in it that he is now examining because of a gift willed to him by someone he barely knew.

Through this gentle, simple telling we glimpse a bit of something awry. And the gradual awakening of Tony's consciousness.

Sparely written, but with enough detail to pull us in, it's actually a mystery and a self-examination but does not have the navel-gazing aspect that can be annoying.

I remember reading and enjoying this a couple of years ago now. What with Covid I wasn't moving books along much but now it's time to set a few books free. I will pop this into a little free library that I know.
