A wonderful book, based largely on historical fact but told from personal perspectives that perforce have to be largely imaginative. I do love the realism of a well researched historical novel - for instance going to the bakers with your own dough, as the baker really just mans the oven! And finding out that the cost of getting a book bound was three bottles of wine and a bottle of vinegar. Thank you for the chance to read this excellent book Dellaporta - I can recommend it to non-history buffs as well, as it is very exciting!

I enjoyed this more and more as I got into it. The role of women as wives, whores or nuns really struck me. The violence is graphically described. Brings it all to life in a rather horrific way. Definitely worth reading.
