This book is a somewhat difficult one to write about. It's creepy, complex, frightening yet somehow beautiful, a dark and violent fairytale. It was beautiful written and had some beautiful lines. I did find that it started out rather confusing. There were a few scenes throughout that just seemed to drag and be drawn out, like the escapades to find out, to try and fix, what happened to Triss.

Like HappyHarryBabe I’m finding this a tough book to review & I know before I begin that my comments are probably going contradict one another..

I nearly didn’t start this book when I realised it was a Young Teens novel but I figure I enjoy Harry Potter so thought I’d give it a go.

So what did I think? Well on the downside I found parts muddling but as I found myself skimming rather than reading in parts that confusion may have been my own fault! Had the story really enthralled me I guess I would have read it more thoroughly. I always felt I should be enjoying it more than I was.

On the upside, I liked the idea of the hidden world alongside our own & I liked the use of the Besiders fear of scissors, as I knew of the superstition that open iron scissors were often left where a child slept to prevent fairies replacing it with a changeling. The changeling idea, I felt was done really well. Non-Triss’s early actions, such as eating Triss’s belongings, the loose leaves etc all made perfect sense once it was known how she came to be & I HAD to know what was going to happen to Non-Triss when her seven days were up.

The back cover blurb describes it as ”A dark & twisted fairytale” & I guess it is (there’s certainly some similarity to “Pinocchio”) & like true traditional fairytales – not the sparkly Disney types - I found it to be incredibly creepy in parts.

I don’t feel that this is a very satisfactory review but as I said I seem to have so many conflicting opinions about the tale. I guess I’d say that there were certain threads & elements of the book that I loved but that overall it’s left me somehow dissatisfied.

It's going back into the BookRay Box & will move on to the next reader when I've read my other choices :o)
