I got this book from BCer haahaahaa98 at today's Boston BookCrossing Meetup; many thanks! It was great to see you again!

I'm always on the lookout for pirate books, in part because I love them, and in part because they're perfect candidates for the annual release challenge in honor of Talk Like A Pirate Day, which is described on its TV Tropes page as "the awesomest silly holiday ever invented". Oh, and I visited Monterey briefly on a trip to the San Francisco area some years back, and still recall how beautiful it was - though I didn't come across any pirates at that time!

This book, inscribed sweetly to a previous owner, includes some fascinating entries, from the "Massacre Cave" to relics of author Robert Louis Stevenson (who lived in Monterey for a short time near the end of his life) to various lost treasures. There are accounts of pirates, primarily of privateer Hippolyte de Bouchard, who sacked Monterey in 1818. And there are the rumors that Francis Drake touched land near San Francisco during his around-the-world voyage in the late 1500s, though there doesn't seem to be conclusive evidence of the exact location. The account here of the famed "Drake plate" - a lead plate inscribed with Drake's claim of discovery, purportedly found in an old bottle half-buried on a beach - is delightfully intriguing, but doesn't seem to have been authenticated. Ah, well, it *could* have happened, right?
