This is what I started the shopaholic series on *the cover is from amazon and refers to the American title of Shopaholic takes Manhatten*

For Rebecca Bloomwood, life is peachy. She has a job on morning TV, her bank manager is actually being nice to her, and when it comes to spending money, her new motto is Buy Only What You Need - and she's really (sort of) sticking to it. The icing on the brioche is that she's been offered a chance to work in New York.

New York! The Museum of Monder Art! The Guggenheim! The Metropolitan Opera House! And Beckey does mean to go to them all. Honestly. It's just that it seems silly not to check out a few other famous places first. Like Saks. And Bloomingdales. And Barneys. And one of those fantastic sample sales where you can get a Prada dress for $10. Or was it $100? Is Becky too dazzled to care.

I thought this was a fun read - though she has not changed much in the beginning but she does do well at the end.

Received this from Bookfrog tonight at Sydney meetup. I think it's number 2 on the TBR pile :D

Well, I was pleasantly surprised by this novel. When I first started reading it, I was worried that it would be just another recap of the first one, which I found very frustrating.

At the beginning of _Shopaholic Abroad_ it does seem like Becky hasn't learnt anything from her experiences and is still making the same mistakes and getting into ridiculous amounts of debt. However, the novel soon gathers pace and concentrates more on Becky's relationship with Luke and the problems and decisions regarding her chosen career as a "financial advisor". I finished it at the beach today and was left with a warm, fuzzy feeling.

I'm very jealous of Becky's new career. It's something I think Noodlebowl would be good at :D. You should rethink your career path!

I'd like to read the third one now. Anyone have it?

Must not have been in the mood for this one. It was too much of a recap of the first one, honestly, how can someone be so ditzy! The shopping would be good, on somebody else's money! On to Hawkette next.

(heh, Fushmush, I had actually applied to be a shopper for Myer when I was looking for jobs last year. Unfortunately I think you need some professional experience or qualifications or something. Obviously they haven't seen my shoe collection.)

Sent to Hawkette today. Enjoy!

Has arrived with me in (I won't lie) overcast Melbourne. Just reading the blurb about living and working in NY (and having Sex and the City on tv!!) makes me want to go back there, maybe pack up and live in the Village for a year...sigh!
Looking forward for some light silly reading, where Becky's antics will make me feel less guilty about all the "unallowed" spending I can't help but do either!!

Journal Entry 8 by Hawkette from Sydney CBD, New South Wales Australia on Saturday, May 15, 2004
Becky is a pathological liar, getting herself into all sorts of trouble with complusive spending, outrageous self justifications, and silly manipulations of the truth. But I can't help but like her! I wonder if that's cos I see a bit of myself in her...well, the spending and not keeping to budget and the justifications...just not as extreme, and naive and stupid, I hope!!

The lies can get pretty annoying, and I could have slapped her with the wedding shananagins (!!), but really her antics are pretty amusing. I almost had tears rolling down my face with laughter from her use of the greeting card on the new bank manager.

A lighthearted poke at our consumerism and lust for credit and shopping, but I'm afraid it is a little too close to the truth! Sad, but funny at the same time.

Showed up in my letter box just as I ran out of chick lit. Yay! Looking forward to reading this, reviews look good.

Loved it! I wasn't so sure at the start of the book - how could anyone be -this- stupid? "I thought I might go and see some cows get milked"? But the book did indeed gather pace, and I finished the last two thirds in a rush tonight instead of doing any homework. Definitely made me yearn to visit New York again... I want to see these little side streets! I did enjoy the focus on her relationship and career, and there were definitely some laugh out loud moments, which is always a good test. Definite warm fuzzy feelings.

And now, on to saine!

A light vintage with a touch of style (Donna Karan) and a seductive, creamy palate, this is best enjoyed when accompanied by one or more of the following:
* A long, hot luxurious bath (I recommend accompaning it with honeysuckle bubblebath)
* Icecream of the vanilla and cookie-dough variety
* A deep armchair and lavander scented candles
* A good sense of humour and no expectation of layered stories or issues.

A very amusing book, although there were at times when I felt like strangling Rebecca Bloomwood. That said, it does make you consider what makes a good deal, the consequences of an impulse driven life, and the value of clear-sightedness... but mostly for me this book was just waiting for the the impending disaster to strike! It's an enjoyable read, and I swallowed it whole (and then bought Shopaholic and Sister when I saw it in sale... maybe I've got more in common with Rebecca than I'd like to admit!)

Will be passed onto Tramgirl at meetup tonight.

Journal Entry 14 by TramGirl from Ballarat, Victoria Australia on Tuesday, January 11, 2005
Picked this up from Saine at last nights meetup, I also picked up 3 other rings/rays and a couple of table books. Mt TBR quadrupled in an hour!!!

Journal Entry 15 by TramGirl from Ballarat, Victoria Australia on Tuesday, February 1, 2005
I started off having to remember how the first book ended and then found it a little hard to get into as Becky was infuriating me!! But once things got going I sped through the book and actually liked the ending, I was hoping she would end up where she did!! How cool would that job be??

Anyway, I liked it in the end and now look forward to getting the next one from somewhere!!

Off to Sunny27 when I get her address.

7/2: In the post to Sunny27

Well, this book had me a bit confused. I really enjoyed it and thought the writing was great, but I couldn't stand the main character! What an annoying, selfish, ignorant little wretch she was. I would definately pick up another Sophie Kinsella novel, just as long as it wasn't another in the series. Posted off to Newk yesterday. Thanks for sharing this book!

Journal Entry 18 by newk from Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Monday, March 7, 2005
Newk has it thanks. Moan, moan I have so many more. will keep in touch. Thanks heaps to all

There must be an art to wrting such enjoyable nonense.

Thanks to froggy for organising this ring and to all those good (and bad) bookcrossers who got it to me.

Gypo has aksed to be skipped, so I'll send rarsberry a PM soon.

Sorry this has taken me so long to catch.
It came in the mail the day I left to go to teh NZBC COnvention, so I found it waiting for me when I got back.
That was last Monday.
But I'm catching it now, and I've actually finished reading it, just this morning.
So I'll go make a journal entry now. :o)

Journal Entry 22 by rarsberry from Christchurch, Canterbury New Zealand on Sunday, April 3, 2005
Well I read this book very quickly.
I started it I think Friday, read about 90 pages.
Then yesterday I read most of the rest of it, leaving the last 30 or so pages for this morning.

Its been a while since I read the first book so I had to remember all the characters.
Becky still hasn't changed her ways, she manages to spend so much money so easily and then she just has too much stuff that she hardly ever uses.
In fact she scares me the way that she spends money so easily..........

She also easily manages to get herself into trouble, one way or another and tries to lie her way out, which makes it all worse.
But she has this knack of getting herself out of all the trouble she is in in her life and comes out fine in the end.

While she was in NY, I thought that she might end up doing what she does at the end of the book, its just right for her.

I'll get the address of the next person on the list so I can pass it on.
Thank you bookfrog for letting me part of this bookring. :o)
Hopefully I'm on a list somewhere for the other book, I think there is another........

This arrived in the mail from NZ today. Thanks rarsberry for passing it on.
I am swamped with bookrings and rays at the moment but will try and get to it in the next couple of weeks.

Journal Entry 25 by kirst040 from Sydney CBD, New South Wales Australia on Monday, May 2, 2005
Hmm, part of me thinks that one instalment of Becky is enough but the other part really wants to know what happens next. Becky is no less frustrating in the second book of the series than she was in the first, overspending, lying, all her usual antics. But...I sat down with this on Saturday afternoon and couldn't put it down until I was finished. At least at the end she had the impetus to move on a bit. I guess I'll be looking for the next book in the series, if only to see what she gets up to in New York.

Will PM augustusgloop for instructions.

You know you don't really need it. You know it's not really very practical. And you know in about two years time you'll barely remember it-- but reading this series is just so darn addictive!

So she's an airhead. She has no financial commonsense. But by gosh, she's charming and adorable, and doesn't she always win everybody over in the end?

It's a love/hate relationship.

And doesn't she make us feel sooo much better about our own shopping habits?

Sending this back to BookFrog... unless there's a last minute surge by shopaholics at the register?

Journal Entry 29 by augustusgloop from Sydney CBD, New South Wales Australia on Tuesday, June 14, 2005
Passed back to BookFrog at tonight's MeetUp at the Arthouse.
