Summertime
5 journalers for this copy...
Part of my 2015 birthday present - one of the Richard & Judy Summer BookClub bundle.
Loved how, although place was fictional, story was based on true events in the '30s - portrayed the horrific time the veterans/black residents/women/those that experienced the hurricane had.

At the beginning it looked like a good book but while reading I found it quite boring.
I liked the story but I prefer it to be quicker.
Ready to send to the next on the list!

Set in the fictional town of Heron Key, Florida in 1935, this debut novel mixes up fact and fiction to bring the reader through one of the worst hurricanes in history. This is historical fiction at its finest. Full of depth, despair, fear, hope, love, loss and friendship. So many emotions are brought to the foreground. Very descriptive writing!
Received with thanks!
I think this got better towards the end. First I thought the characters were quite stereotypical and 'love' between an 8-year-old girl and a grown man was a bit unpalatable to me.
However, the story of the veterans and the last third of the book with the description of the storm were very powerful and at the end I really ended up caring about Henry, Missy, Douglas and others.
Thank you for sharing this book. Will send to the next reader soon.
