His freedom is enclosed; his view curtailed by iron bars. But he is a man, nonetheless, and the vice, misery and degradation of prison changes a man...

I expected a completely different book, especially because of the degradation part led me to believe that there would be more criticism toward the prison system. I didn't get that criticism. All the opposite, Falconer falls in love while imprisoned; it's a tender and sexual thing Jody and him have it on. He is planning to become a runaway, especially in the last half of the novel, and the novel lost me there.

Thanks Winterbirh for the RABCK! There are a LOT of books for me to read before this one but I will get to it someday. :)

This novel and I got off to a rocky start with the early cat scene that made me lose all my sympathy towards the book. Reading on, the book also seemed to work as a magical sleeping aid for me and therefore there are probably some bits that were completely lost on me. So all in all, didn't like this one much except for the ending that managed to grab my interest more efficiently than other parts of the book.

If possible, I will send this to a bookcrosser who has this on their wish list.

2022-07-27 -> Arrived safely. Thanx a bunch. Love all the stamps!

2022-11-09 -> Finished this one this morning. Was always curious about Cheever since that Seinfeld episode. I found the book well-written and easy to follow. I wasn't enthralled with the story.

"Caught" this in the mail today as a Wishlist RABCK! Thank you!

1979 Penguin paperback of the 1977 No. 1 U.S. Bestseller. This was on my list of best modern books to read. It's a short little book.

I can let this go after I read:
1930 Expelled (short story) [read 2015]
1951 Goodbye, My Brother (short story) [read 2017]
1953 Torch Song (short story) [read 2018]
1954 The Five-Forty-Eight (short story) [read 2018]
1957 The Wapshot Chronicle [read 2008]
1958 The Country Husband (short story) [read 2019]
1964 The Swimmer (short story) [read 2020]
1978 Why I Write Short Stories (essay) [read 2021]

Edit November 30, 2022: This was good, but I just skimmed to end for time. Yeah, the cat scene, ughh. I really don't like violence porn in literature. A lot of these acclaimed modern authors tend to push those shock limits, for the porn value. I have read more than my fair share of it. I currently have this ranked at #2137 on my ranked list of best-read books lately.

Aside from loving shared books, my main passion in life is supporting the human rights work of my good friend, Anni Cyrus. šŸ’– šŸ’– Her life story of survival as a childhood refugee is astounding, and quite moving!

The Big Tech cabal unfairly shadow-bans and twists a narrative agenda against real freedom truth-tellers like Anni, but please look her up anyway on Google, DuckDuckGo, and YouTube, etc., and make a compassionate judgment. You can also follow her on Facebook and Instagram, among other platforms.
