It's amazing that I can come away from reading a book about cadavers and the amazing and repulsive (and sometimes both) things that are done to them, and still feel the book was quite....witty? Roach is a great writer and uses just enough irreverance to make her subject matter palatable (although I could have done without some of the stories on animal deaths and experimentation).

Highly recommended.

This is the bookRING copy of STIFF - for the current list of participants, please see my bookshelf page. Please get to the book as soon as you can, journal upon receipt and upon completion and please don't forget to use delivery confirmation for US to US addresses. Thanks, and enjoy!

Whatever topic Mary Roach decides to tackle for her next book...sign me up! Who would've thought that a writer could take a topic this macabre and disturbing and create such a thought-provoking, wise and often very funny, book? I thoroughly enjoyed this.

Got it today. Thanks, fsr44. And THANK YOU Grover3d for sending this book traveling. I'm really looking forward to it!

Journal Entry 6 by mlbish from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania USA on Friday, March 19, 2004
Wow! I really liked this book. It was just the right mix of science and history, and dark and funny. I was a little surprised about how dark it felt to me. I should have expected it, given I was reading about dead people. But the author knew just when to inject humor, and she wrote the whole book in a very respectful way. Not only has she written something totally entertaining, but I think she will open people's eyes to all the possibilites for uses of the dead. I would hope this would lead to more enthusiasm in the population for organ donation, etc.

Thanks, Grover! I am traveling this week, but I will try to get to a post office and pass it along as soon as possible.

Disgusting, hilarious, thought-provoking, never dull. I will definitely look for more books by this author.
I thought the most interesting part was the description of a psychological disorder that affects many transplant recipients--the belief that the recipient takes on likes, dislikes, and other characteristics of the organ donor.

Released on Monday, April 12, 2004 at Controlled Release in Controlled release, to another bookcrosser Controlled Releases.

Sent out today by mediamail. Should arrive in about a week.

I enjoyed the wit and writing of such an unusual subject by the author. I got a little bored in places and had to skip sections, but overall, it was very interesting. I love forensics and there were a lot of stories about how they know what they do about bodies. Thanks so much, I will send this on soon!

Having read another book by Roach, Dead Reckoning which she writes with Michael Baden, I knew her style was a treat. I didn't know I'd find this book so enGROSSing (sorry, the pun just had to be done) and amazing. The only problem with the book was it was too short! I wanted more BODY (*cough* sorry again!) to the book. It's a fascinating look at what is done to the human body when we die. And it's started me thinking about donating my body to science to boot!

Not sure when I'll get this off in the mail. Money's semi-tight until about a month from now. I'll try and get it off sooner than that though.

Sorry this has sat here so long. I feel like a bad book auntie.

I've got to grab an envelop big enough to fit this book and then it'll be leaving my hands. It should be gone by midweek.

I've been looking forward to reading this for awhile, and then my bookclub chose it as one of our December reads. Thanks, grover, for rearranging the schedule to accomodate that. I will get it read over the next week or so, and get it moving on its way.

Journal Entry 17 by PokPok from Vista, California USA on Wednesday, October 27, 2004
Add me to the 9 star club for this book. I just loved it. I was the one in grade school who actually enjoyed dissecting pigs hearts, which my mom brought to school, and ultimately became a scientist, so the subject matter didn't disturb me at all. I did think her prologue was good to set up the tone in the book, however, when she said "this isn't a book about death". I found all the chapters interesting, especially those on the gross anatomy lab (and the women who held her cadaver's hand to comfort it, while another person cut it up), and the one on the airplane crash, which happened close to where I live. Very interesting stuff.

I took this on vacation, and my DH, bombastic-bob, read it as well. I'll try to get a review posted from him, also.

Mamikaem asked to be skipped, so I'll send this on debnance in the next week or so.

Thanks grover, for rearranging the order of the ring to accomodate my reading this for my bookclub.

I'm dying (sorry) to read this book.

More later....

One of my favorite reads of the year. I already find myself telling other people about it, suggesting they read it, promoting it. "It's not what you think," I keep saying. "It's really funny." But all I seem to get are these odd, somewhat quizzical looks. May have to find copies of the book to use as stocking stuffers this year.

Released on Friday, December 10, 2004 at about 4:00:00 PM BX time (GMT-06:00) Central Time (US & Canada) at Postal System: Bookring/Bookray in Alvin, Texas USA.

Are you kidding me. This many people have read this book and it looks brand new. Not at all worn out(or in, whatever). VERY curious. Can't wait to start reading it in front of people. I love the cover. Should I PM MoonDancer11 - Irving, TX
or Mamikaem - Maryland Heights, MO or IACBY - Cave Creek, AZ next?

Journal Entry 23 by IACBY from Shaker Heights, Ohio USA on Monday, June 6, 2005
Just received today! Will start reading ASAP :o)

Update 08-04-05: Just wanted to let you know that I still have the book, have started it, but it has been reading slow for me (not sure why). I will do my best to finish it in within the next month or so.

Journal Entry 24 by IACBY from Shaker Heights, Ohio USA on Monday, October 17, 2005
I am finally done with the book-- what a great read! This book is going to the next person on the list (midwinter), as soon as she provides me her addy.

All the best, and thanks for being patient with me.

Arrived safely in NJ a day or two ago. Will journal again when I finish reading!

Journal Entry 27 by illinicheme from Novato, California USA on Tuesday, January 3, 2006
I LOVED this book. It was perfect nonfiction - fascinating subject matter presented in an intelligent, thought-provoking, and highly entertaining fashion. I thought she lost a tiny bit of steam in the last two chapters, but other than that, fabulous. I'll echo others here and say "sign me up for Mary Roach's other works!"

Seferim's profile indicated the desire to be skipped, so the book is now on its way to roadrunner.

Journal Entry 28 by roadrunner from Spring, Texas USA on Wednesday, January 18, 2006
This arrived yesterday. I'm amazed that it's still chugging along 2 years after starting its journey! I will read asap and send it on its way.

Journal Entry 29 by roadrunner from Spring, Texas USA on Thursday, February 2, 2006
Very entertaining and slightly disturbing. I had a really hard time reading the chapter on air flight. I'm sure that will be stuck in my mind while I'm flying to Argentina next week. I also had some trouble with the animal experiments. But having said that, this is a fun book and full of things that will be useful in my next game of trivial pursuit! Thanks for sharing!

Journal Entry 30 by roadrunner from Spring, Texas USA on Tuesday, February 21, 2006
I am desperately trying to find SOMEONE to pass this book to. The next two people after me asked to be skipped. The next two are not responding to PM's. I will keep moving down the list - sigh . . .

I do look forward to the read after the two serious ones I am readig right now. Will post once I have started and once I am done. Thanks, Brendalc57

I am about to finally start reading this book...it looks quite interesting. I had two ahead of it. Will journal as soon as I am finished reading it. This books looks like it been through quite a journey and ready for it's stiff tag. LOL.

Journal Entry 34 by wingAnonymousFinderwing on Thursday, May 4, 2006
I have finally finished reading the book, so sorry I held it up but left on an emergency family trip and forgot book. I found the book interesting but at times it just really dragged on and was a bit gory and jus a bit distasteful. I am ready to send it on to who every is ready for it next. Thanks grover3d.
