"Na een dagenlange eenzame voettocht in Mexico kwam Anema aan bij de Tarahumaras, een primitieve indianenstam ver van onze samenleving. Op 3000 meter hoogte leven ze volstrekt geisoleerd in grotten aan de randen van diepe canyons. Tesguino, een zelfgestookte drank, blijkt het sleutelwoord om contact met hen te krijgen."

A fascinating account of a Dutch woman’s visits to the remotest mountain region of Chihuahua, where she tries to get to know the Tarahumara Indians by living among them. She became fascinated when she heard about their incredible ability to run long distances in difficult terrain wearing only sandals made of rope and strips of car tyres (huaraches). They are extremely suspicious of outsiders, fiercely protective of their culture and only gradually accepted her presence. She tried her utmost to fit in and simply observe, thus learning far more about them than many later visitors who were only really interested in the running. She also visited street children in Tijuana and a Tarahumara woman who had left to become a teacher, then stayed in Mexico City, working for an aid agency. The author later returned to othef Tarahumara’s who refused to engage with her, then back to the original group where she realised that she had originally been looking through rose-tinted spectacles. There were many downsides to their lifestyle and the influence of outsiders was beginning to encroach on their way of life and values. It’s a shame this hasn’t been translated into English because, by all accounts, the only other well-known book about these people is Born to Run by Christopher McDouglas, a journalist from Men’s Health who made the area famous, but misrepresented and romanticised their running culture.
