Zac Meier is a teen-aged cancer patient who has become familiar with every room on the floor (he has stayed in all of them). Now, once again in Room 1, he is totally isolated because of a bone marrow transplant. Enter new patient Mia next door in Room 2. She is loud (playing Lady Gaga repeatedly), angry, and scared. Somehow, the pair forms a bond that lasts beyond their stays in the hospital. This bond helps each overcome setbacks and obstacles. Each of their perspectives are represented. Poignant yet true-to-life, a story worth reading by all.

I really wasn't sure that I could read this book, although I have read a few other 'cancer' books like The Fault in Our Stars. This one was different - Zac is a great lovable character, but Mia is angry and lashing out at those who love her. They meet during his bone marrow transplant. The story has much truth - about teens with cancer and their families- but there is also humor and this is more about their friendship and living a full life. I am glad that the story ended where it did - without all the story wrapped up neatly.

Quotes to remember:

Three is the worst hour. It's too dark, too bright, too late, too early. It's when questions come, droning like flies.

You saw me for what I was, not what I wasn't. You made me imagine that life could go on. That I wanted to.

I don't know how it must fee for your body to turn against you again and again. To spend month fighting death, to win then lose, win then lose, then have to put the armor back on. To calculate the odds. Recalculate.

Courage is standing still even though you want to run. Courage is planting yourself and turning toward the thing that scares you, whether it's your leg or your friends or the guy who could break your heart again. It's opening your eyes and staring that fear down.
