Trains and Lovers: A Novel
3 journalers for this copy...
Somebody sent me this last year via BetterWorldBooks, but never confessed.
I started to read this as I'm about to meet a train-lover who also likes McCall Smith, although he probably already has five copies of this.
I'm half way through and I love this book. It brings to mind so many memories of people and trips and evokes thoughts about life in general. I usually write long journal entries when I read something like this (another McCall Smith), but now the more important thing is to finish the book in time. I might squeeze in something later.

The return of the Finnish Ambassador of Yorkshire wasn't quite as I had expected it - the octogenarian ticket salesman said 'tsk tsk, tickets are mighty expensive at this hour, they are much cheaper at seven', but he failed to mention that all seats were already sold out!! So first we had a nice two-hour-wait at King's Cross and had something to eat, then the train was late and then we stood in the hot and humid corridor with seven other people the two-hour trip to York ๐๐๐. A small consolation is our gorgeous new landlord at Alcuin Lodge Guest House - we stayed here 15 years ago and were hosted by an elderly couple.
I did manage to finish this book in that train corridor!!

Journal Entry 3 by kirjakko at Brigantes Bar & Brasserie OBCZ / Meetup Venue in York, North Yorkshire United Kingdom on Saturday, May 23, 2015
I struggled with this book at first. It wasn't till half way through that it finally grabbed me. After that, I couldn't put it down.
Its amazing what people wil tell you if you take the time to talk to to them on a long train journey. But, maybe that is something from the past, as sadly, nowadays, travellers seem to be permanently plugged in to their electronic devices!

Taking to the Nottingham meetup tomorrow, but not travelling by train.
Tomorrow's transport will be car and bus.
