Galetas/escaliers du marché
An old story in modern dress, or perhaps in jeans. I think it would be better as a standalone, if the reader were not familiar with Jane Austen's Emma. Unfortunately it's a book I know well, having studied it for O levels and one of the few "school" books I have reread many times over the years. AMcS brings the characters up to date very nicely in his usual easy, at times learned, and faintly humorous style, but I found it off-putting to be always mentally comparing the two versions, the differences in character, the development of the love interests and so on, and the ending comes too fast, wrapping the intrigues up far too glibly. The best-drawn character is fussy old Mr Woodhouse, more likeable here than in the original, and the least, sadly, is George Knightly who we hardly see; he just seems to hover in the background. So, an interesting exercise, bravely tacked by a man - although I do know quite a few men who admire Jane Austen's pithy wit.
I don't think I'll bother reading the two other Jane Austen re-tellings that have been published so far.
p.293 top, there's a typo: passed over the Frank
p. 59 was attacked by my cat and ripped apart; restuck with sellotape.
