Yip! Just found this ‘spare copy’ of Grave Secret in one of my stuff piles. Currently tackling some de-cluttering and I’m nibbling away at the edges of my hoard of books, beads and paper crafting piles. Pleased to find this as I recall noting it on someone’s wish-list and feeling jipped that I didn’t have a copy to hand at the time. I’ll check, and in the interim mark this as RESERVED and pop the book details below.

GRAVE SECRET by CHARLAINE HARRIS (2009)
ISBN: 1-4072-3458-7 / 978-1-4072-3458-8 (UK PB)
Publisher: Gollancz

When she was 15, Harper Connelly was struck by lightning. She’s left with headaches and episodes of muscle weakness. Sometimes her right hand shakes. – And she can find dead people.

It’s taken a few years, but Harper’s made a success of her life. The lightning-struck sleuth is making a living, using her talent to help people, and she’s got a boyfriend – her stepbrother Tolliver. Harper and Tolliver take a break from looking for the dead to visit the two little girls they both think of as sisters. But, as always happens when they travel to Texas, memories of their horrible childhood resurface.

To make matters worse, Tolliver learns from his older brother that their father is out of jail and seeking forgiveness, trying to re-establish contact with other family members. Tolliver wants no part of the man - but he may not have a choice in the matter.

Soon, family secrets ensnare them both, as Harper finally discovers what happened to her missing sister, Cameron, so many years before. - And what she finds out will change her world forever.

Dark, complex and dynamic, Harris sure manages to pack in a whole lot of punch to the last of the Harper Connelly quartet. Her characters are vivid enough to capture attention and her plotlines gutsy and sufficiently intricate to offer exceptionally compelling reading. It is most pleasing that stumbling across this copy prompted me to re-read it and offer it elsewhere.

I do so enjoy Harris’s writing, it’s exceptional. In Harper she’s created a stubborn, tormented but kind, heroine, who is unusual and intriguing. While the dynamic between Harper and Tolliver contains lovely social observations and has exquisitely tender uplifting points. Harris’s narrative is underpinned by a really deep understanding of what motivates people and her plot lines twine into a superior piece of gripping fiction with a nerve shredding finale. More please.

Marking this as reserved as it’s about to head off to another Bookcrosser.

Thank you so much for this Wishlist book, rainbow3! I loved the recycled wrapper—so clever—and can't wait to finish Harper's story.

Knowing this was the last Harper Connelly book, I thought I was prepared for anything to happen, but I was wrong. The story kept me guessing as Harper and Tolliver came full circle back to Texarkana to finally resolve their complicated family issues, and a murder or two. Can we start some kind of petition to convince Charlaine Harris to write more of these?
