A young woman, Hester Prynne, is publicly shamed in Puritan Boston for the sin of adultery. The evidence is her infant daughter Pearl. Hester's husband, presumed dead, arrives on the scene and forbids Hester to reveal his identity. The husband seeks revenge, but Hester refuses to name the father.

The original publication of the novel drew an angry reaction from the people of Salem, Massachusetts. . This 1991 volume, in the series "Case Studies in Contemporary Criticism," includes "The Scarlet Letter" with Hawthorne's preface to the second edition.
