A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian

A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian is a story about the reaction of two daughters when their elderly father announces he is marrying a much younger Ukrainian immigrant - a voluptuous, synthetic blonde, gold-digger called Valentina. It is told from the perspective of his younger daughter, Nadezhda, who has been estranged from her older sister,Vera, since their mother’s funeral. The two sisters come together against a common enemy and we share their journey from initial hostility, through acceptance and finally to friendship. We also learn about the family’s secret history, which began with their father and mother meeting before the War and the struggles and horrors they faced during it.
It is advertised as being an extremely comical story take on a family drama. The later I can agree with but the former, not so much. This book started promisingly and then lost its way.
I had a few smiles, for sure. But I never laughed out loud, which is my definition of a truly humorous novel.
It was, however, a portrayal of the ridiculousness of the green card process and the inherent obstacles in immigration that took a comical rather than serious angle, making this book a light - hearted reading.

Many thanks for sending the book to me! I have a German translation on my shelf, but was advised from a friend to definitely read the English one....
So, here it is!
So, here it is!
Read German and English versions simultaneously...
I must admit, funny, but not as good as promised by my friend.
Astonishing that you can write about tractors and other vehicles, but mean women and politics. That was really good!
The German book is now with my dad (because of the Ukraine being one of the "protagonists"), the English version will soon travel on...
