Richard, a wealthy doctor, invites his estranged sister Angela and her family to join his for a week at a vacation home in the English countryside. Richard has just re-married and inherited a willful stepdaughter in the process; Angela has a feckless husband and three children who sometimes seem alien to her.

All eight arrive with low expectations for a pleasant holiday....

Wishlist Challenge (#22)

Journal Entry 3 by wingdaffodil-2wing at North Walsham, Norfolk United Kingdom on Saturday, July 11, 2015
Received in the post as a surprise RABCK from my wishlist from Plum-Crazy. Really looking forward to reading this one as I've much enjoyed the other two books I've read by this author. (It's up to you Plum as I always follow your monthly themes-see under Book Talk in the Forum-What to read this month- to the uninitiated). Also in the parcel were a fabric book cover, a book release bag and two surprise Christmas themed books from the Christmas in July challenge. Thanks very much you are very generous!

REVIEW:- "I always feel a degree of guilt when I'm sent a book as a RABCK then I don't like it but I would prefer to be honest in my reviews rather than pretend to like a book or be non-committal. I was disappointed with this book as I really enjoyed two other novels by the same author. I liked the characters in the story and wanted to find out what happened to them but I just couldn't get used to the way it was written. I found it very disjointed, confusing and hard to follow so gave up with the book around page 40."

I am meeting Snoopy56 today so will offer the book to her in the first instance.

Like Daffodil-2 I have enjoyed two other books by Mark Haddon so it will be interesting to see how I get on with this one.

I also found the style of writing confusing but decided to persevere. After about halfway through I thought I might as well finish it. Certainly not as good as his previous two books. The characters were interesting but there were a lot of loose ends. It's never really explained why siblings Angela and Richard have drifted so far apart in the first place.
