Queenie Bligh's neighbors were not impressed when she took in Jamaican lodgers in 1948, but what was she to do, her husband had still not returned from the war and she had to make ends meet. Gilbert Joseph had been in the RAF but he found he as treated quite differently when he returned to London as a civilian. His wife Hortense longed for a better life in England and was quite dismayed to find London is quite shabby and not the city she had dreamed of.
