Eleven Minutes is the story of Maria, a young girl from a Brazilian village, whose first innocent brushes with love leave her heartbroken. At a tender age, she becomes convinced that she will never find true love, instead believing that "love is a terrible thing that will make you suffer. . . ." A chance meeting in Rio takes her to Geneva, where she dreams of finding fame and fortune. Maria's despairing view of love is put to the test when she meets a handsome young painter. In this odyssey of self-discovery, Maria has to choose between pursuing a path of darkness -- sexual pleasure for its own sake -- or risking everything to find her own "inner light" and the possibility of sacred sex, sex in the context of love.
This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.

I have read this book earlier.
I took the book to the Bookcrossing Convention in Oxford.
Happy reading!

Picked up from the Book Buffet table at the Oxford Anniversary Bookcrossing Convention April 2015.
Tale of a young Brazilian prostitute working in Geneva. A lot of philosophical discussion of love and sex, as well as descriptions of sadistic practices. ( NOT another 'Fifty Shades of Grey', though.) More interesting is the voyage of self-discovery Maria makes. From the Afterword, it seems to be based on a true story.

Caught this evening at Wellington Bookcrossers' monthly meeting that was scheduled to be at the Chicago Bar but when I arrived a few minutes late I found the place firmly in darkness with evidence of workmen having been there. The business has ceased to exist. Who knows why or where all those usual runners and bikies will meet now? Where will we go for that matter.
Fortunately there is Bin44 right across the concourse and we have eaten there once before when Chicago was being renovated not very long ago. Pretty dramatic to find it deceased.
Nice to catch a book that has been to the 2015 Convention in Oxford - wish I could have been there. Great set of photos on the BC site.

Reading at the moment, in a hurry to prepare for the Auckland UnConvention to which I will fly on Friday 13th. Can that possibly be unlucky when I am reading a Paulo Coelho book?
Looking forward to catching up with Fee and many other delightful bookcrossers who I see will be attending. Will check Wishlists before I leave here.

I did check the Wish Lists as I'm nearly finished this book. There was only one person out of 16 who lived in NZ but she put her wish on the list in 2004 and doesn't appear to be very active. I'll take the book with me to the Auckland Unconvention and let it take its chances up there.
Didn't enjoy the book as much as I'd hoped - tended to get a bit introspective at times. Can't predict the ending at all although I am up to p266. My curiosity will be soon satisfied. Electric blanket awaits. Outside temperature is 8 degrees although it is supposed to be spring.
