I came across this fair-condition softcover on the book-swap shelf in the Tyngsboro, MA post office lobby, and as I'd been curious about the book for some time I was happy to have a copy. The premise: an Electomagnetic Pulse has shut down electronics in the US, and the characters have to cope with a world in which most technology is no longer usable.
The setup is certainly intriguing, and I've read some interesting (and often unnerving) discussions of how possible such a widespread EMP attack might actually be. But whether one believes it likely on this scale or not, the effects on the small North Carolina town where the action takes place are definitely catastrophic. We see many aspects of this type of apocalypse, from the trauma of realizing how much is lost to the ongoing struggles to survive as resources dwindle and enemies attack. But it's the focus on a relatively small group of people that emphasizes the tribulations, especially with regard to main character John and his 12-year-old daughter - who's diabetic, and for whom the dwindling supply of insulin (which, of course, requires refrigeration to remain usable) becomes critical.
The book covers roughly a year from the onset of the attacks, emphasizing the week-by-week preparations of the community at first, and then skipping larger segments of time to show us how everyone has fared.
In some ways it reminded me of Susan Pfeffer's Life As We Knew It, which has a different cause for the catastrophe but which focuses on the effects in one small town and has many similarities in both the best and worst natures among the survivors.

I have so many books right now, I am even trying to weed out the ones languishing on Mt TBR, so I am endeavoring not to add -- unless I just can't help myself :-) - this one is avl

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
Congratulations!! You have found a rare and unique gift, a travelling book!!
While it is possible I have read and given my thoughts on this book, it is more likely it is a book I found/purchased specifically to send out into the world! In either case, please read what has been said before, where has this book been, who enjoyed it, who didn't -- and perhaps, if you care to, you can add your two cents!
You do not have to join bookcrossing to pick up, enjoy, and journal a book -- however, if you do decide to join us, please consider using me (innae) as your recommending friend, and if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to drop me a personal message (for more info, check out the FAQ).
And again, thank you for saving this book from a life of boredom!
