Unsuitable romance is the theme of this wickedly comedic novel. A series of entanglements brings together an odd assortment of characters - clergymen, university dons, naive students, and academic hangers-on - with hilarious results.
I really enjoyed this, it's very funny and has stood the test of time well.

This is the first book I've read by Barbara Pym & apparently she wrote this book in the 1930s, and when WWII started, she shelved it, later, feeling the book was book "dated" & so she scrapped it permanently, only for it to be published by her estate.
For me it wasn't so much dated as "of it's time", which gave it a gentle charm, at least to my mind. It didn't make me laugh out loud as promised although I was mildly amused...& certainly entertained by all the antics. I do have to say however, that the general assumption that husbands couldn't be expected to remain faithful to their wives did rankle with me!

My husband spotted this book whilst walking the dog the other day, and as it was still there tonight he brought it home for me. It'll be a little while before I read it (in the middle of a big series at the moment), but I'll post an entry when I do and then send it on its way to somebody else. Love the idea of bookcrossing! Finally got around to reading this and enjoyed the gentle humour. Re released in Aberaeron - if you find it I hope you enjoy it and pass it on!

I didn't read it..unfortunately it's not my usual genre, and with all the books out there that I'm afraid I'll never be able to read, I'm very selfish with my reading time. However, the idea of the bookcrossing website is awesome.
