Most reviewers' take on this book is that it is a book about the impossibility of "The American Dream," the shallowness of American life, yada yada yada. I read this book as an elegy to deep personal disappointment despite having played by the rules. More particularly, I read the book as a warning of sorts to parents; saying that despite parental love, attention and concern, kids can still turn out rotten, self-absorbed, misguded and that they may betray you. I think the novel is also about balance in one's life - striking a balance between being a good parent and being an emotional and physical doormat to one's child and, supposing one's child ends up abnormal, not blaming YOURSELF for THEIR missteps. I think the novel also speaks to just how much we should (or should not) allow religion and ideology to influence our sense of self.

This is a very thought-provoking book that will likely be interpreted in as many ways as it has readers.
