The Time Keeper by Mitch Albom - very good
This is the third of Mitch Albom's books I've read in the last year - this one's a bookray so had to be read immediately and quickly. Not a problem!
Dor is the first man on earth to begin to count and to measure time. He notices the Sun's transit and the phases of the moon. He begins to measure them by inventing numbers and a sundial and patiently records what he learns. And so begins mankind's obsession with time. As his punishment, he is imprisoned in a cave, never to age or die until he is sent down to earth to save two people who no longer understand the true value life or the value of their time upon the earth.
I have to say that since I stopped wearing a watch and stopped working, my life is less ruled by the time and date. I know it's not a practical proposition, but we could all do with a little re-assessment of life's priorities and take some time to smell the flowers!
Not a complicated book, but sweet and though provoking in the same way as Paolo Cueolo's work.

I've given this book a low rating, because the few things that didn't work for me really marred the whole book.
What was good: the comforting message, time is precious and valuable, the time you spend with loved ones are important, and people who might be unkind are not really worth giving your life up for.
What was not so good: i found that the narration of Dor started to get muddy with that of God, and towards the end of the book the anti-science message and anti-choice messages starting to feel very preachy.
I also found that the characters could have been less predictable - the older successful business guy who gets cold because of a childhood trauma, and the young very smart girl who gets hurt as she doesn't understand a relationship. i didn't really believe the young girl could be so smart and work people out so quickly but also be so naive.
i thought it might be more interesting if these characters were swapped, but then suddenly realised how the book was going to end... which i won't share here as it might spoil it for people but i started to lose interest towards the end of the book

I found this book difficult to get into for the first half. I wasn't keen on the 'voice' of the narrator. I enjoyed the second half much more. Overall though, I enjoyed the book. It was interesting and had some nice elements. I think it's the kind of book I'd enjoy discussing more than reading. I'm glad I read it but don't think I will ever want to reread it.

I echo Quadrat's verdict almost completely! There were some good bits about the book - I liked the alternating structure & some of the imagery. The message was too 'spiritual' and preachy for me and I found the way Sarah was presented was very stereotypical- as someone who works with teenagers every day her character really didn't ring true for me at all.
Thanks all for sharing it with me though. I'll send it onwards asap.

I enjoyed this book but agree with various comments that other people above have made.
I liked the message, and the alternating structure.
I found the older mans character more believably written than Sarah, although as a voluntary youth worker I have met girls like Sarah in my work and I have always thought it really sad when these girls think it's the end of the world when a boy they like doesn't like them!
I did think that the book showed the American High School social grouping that happens and I just think it always sounds like a horrid atmosphere. It makes me so glad I grew up in the UK!
I can very clearly see how people would see it as preachy, but I actually found it fascinating how the author wove bible stories into the actual story and I got the impression that he wasn't trying to hide it. It would be interesting to read more from him and see how he writes other stories.
The next person has told me they are away at the moment and has asked me to hold off sending it to them until they are back.

Enjoyed this and unlike some previous readers I did believe the character of the young girl. Just because she was clever academically doesn't necessarily mean that she would have good social skills. The author did say that no judgement is meant to be passed on the science of cryonics or the choices of its practitioners and patients and thanked the organisation that helped with research in this area for what is, after all, a work of fiction.

I think I will probably damn this book with faint praise because I thought it was nice. A clever idea and a quick, pleasant read with a good moral, but ultimately the resolution was a little too neat and tidy for me and like others I found the characters rather stereotypical.
Moving on to mysteriousmummy very soon.

I have really enjoyed reading this book. I agree with other readers about the lack of depth in the characters however this didn't get in the way of my enjoyment of the story.
I will say however that the book is not the same quality of Mitch Albom's previous works, The Five People You meet in heaven was life affirming and made me cry a lot, this book certainly did not affect me in the same way.
The person after me on the list asked to be skipped so its on its way to HappyHarryBabe.

REVIEW:- I found this story a bit confusing at times and felt that the author could have done much more with the subject matter. Dor, although an interesting character just made everything much more complicated than I felt it needed to be. I was very interested in the cryogenics and I thought the Facebook references were very apt and accurate but the whole story for me was very disjointed. So much so that I stopped reading half-way through and started another book, which I finished before coming back to finish this one,
I loved The Five People you Meet in Heaven by the same author but none of his other books that I've read have touched me in the same way. It annoyed me at times when the present day story leapt back to Dor's life story as I was more keen to know about Victor and Sarah. However I found the ending very emotional and satisfactory and it reminded me of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol."
The book is being posted back to its owner very soon. Thanks for letting me get the chance to read it.

It is now yours to do as you like with it, pass it to a friend or just leave it somewhere different for someone else to find and help it with its' journey. Of course if you can't bear to part with it at the moment then keep it, but please let me know that you have found it. If you join bookcrossing, which is free and spam-free, you can follow the book on its' travels as you will get an email each time it changes hands, but if you prefer to remain anonymous, that's fine too. Please also say what you intend to do with the book next. Thanks for coming onto the site to let me know you have found the book.
I already have books travelling in many countries around the world-a list can be found on my bookcrossing profile.
When re-releasing this book please be aware that airports are not a good place to leave books unless they have a specific book exchange shelf or area, due to security problems, so they may well just be disposed of. Also charity shops may well discard books that have been labelled in any way and they mostly chose only the books in the very best condition
to place on their shelves and discard the rest-so another bad release option.
