An unidentified teenage girl is struck down and left to die along a stretch of Charlotte, North Carolina, highway. In the lab, the bruise patterns tell Tempe that this hit-and-run was no accident. Meanwhile, Tempe is called on to analyze a bizzare shipment confiscated by the US Customs - mummified Peruvian dogs, antiquities that may have been smuggled in by a Desert Storm vet. Two disparate cases, too may mysteries, and turmoil in her personal life push Tempe to the brink. Then a chilling link emerges between her South American artifacts, the death of a prominent Charlotte businessman whose name turned up in the dead girl's purse, and the nightmare reality of human trafficking... and Tempe must race to protect her community, her family, and herself.

I was not so sure, whether I liked the plot or not, however the addendum pages, that the author adds at the end (and should definitely be read after having completed the book, as they would be a spoiler!) helped to understand, why she came up with this story. One can learn a lot about trauma impact on bones and whether a body was knocked down by a car or already on the ground when being run over. The book of course pictures rather unbelievable coincidences, but generally the idea is not too bad.

Thanks a lot for bringing another Kathy Reichs along!

In my oppinion the relations between the cases are almost incredible - so at the end I have been disappointed. For me the very showdown is almost absurd and Tempe Brennan seems sometimes to be a female James Bond - a bit too much, especially in Afghanistan and at the very end.

Who looks for the "old" Tempe Brennan, will find less of her in the newer books which makes me really sad.
So if Kathy Reichs won't work a bit on the ideas, I really don't know if I read the next one in the series!
