All the inhabitants of an island feel isolated and trapped between civil war. All the whites have to get away, but Pop Eye, the resented man who lives in the island since he became Grace's lover becomes a teacher of sorts. He promises to give the children the best education he can, but in all truth, he lets the parents do all the education. He keeps reading Charles Dickens' Great Expectations. One girl in particular will find him an inspiration.

CRITICISM

I didn't like the book. At the beginning, it's too innocent, and the ending is such a letdown after all the drama. In the first half of the book nothing really seems to be happening, but then in the last third part of the book, suddenly everything happens at once, but the narrative loses its attention to detail and passes flying over events. I have given it a 5 because I liked the concept in the first third, and the scenery is well-described.

This book followed me to Finland as well! I love the idea of books travelling, so of course I had to offer Mister Pip a ride! It was one of the lightest ones on the shelf, to be honest :D

I decided to give up around page 50. Mister Pip just wasn't my cup of tea, not in the least. To begin with, I found it really confusing the story took place in the 1990's when it rather could have been turn of the century. And Charles Dickens...was he just the first author that had come to mind while penning the story? Somehow I couldn't find the setting interesting at all, so it was best to give up than to waste several nights going through the book.

Some parts of the book were quite terrible, but I know things like that do happen.
