Catherine and David are a well-off brand-new marriage chilling it out. They have nothing to do except swimming, suntanning, and making love. They live of David's successful copyright from two well-received bestselling books. The good weather and the good service at the hotel help them out to live in paradise during their honeymoon. Later, they decide to travel to northern Spain, although it is not the right moment or the right weather. Their life together begins to seem more real and not too perfect. Then, David realises that he needs to write his third novel: it will be the story of his father in Africa during a hunting trip, mixing fantasy with reality and including himself as a character with problems of consciousness. Catherine introduces him to another girl - Marita, as much as a free spirit as they are.

Of all the books I have read from Hemingway, this is the one which explores the sexual side of life the most. Catherine looked bisexual to me - she takes the marriage's games of changing roles too much to heart, although that may be my 21-century impression. It is never fully named during the novel. David is completely straight, though
