I'm claiming this book from the Bride of Potpourri bookbox. It's a biography of the first "efficiency expert", and sounds quite fascinating!

Later: Lots of details on the history of industrial efficiency in general, plus biographical details of Taylor himself. Not too surprisingly, there was quite a disconnect between Taylor's idea of pure efficiency and the idea of decent working conditions for individual laborers; Taylor seems to have considered workers as interchangeable cogs who should have no interest in or control over the jobs they did beyond following his instructions.

I can certainly see the appeal of optimizing manufacturing processes, and many of Taylor's ideas and inventions (he was quite a dab hand at crafting things) were marvelous, saving time and energy and labor. But he did go overboard on the "maximize effort, minimize workforce" aspect of things, and fell foul of the budding labor unions - cue conflict and controversy...

The book includes keen looks at many aspects of personal and working life at the turn of the 19th-to-20th centuries.
