I got this good-condition softcover (complete with the sheet of stickers inside) from the used-manga shelves at Harrisons Comics. It's about a girl training to become a wizard, with her childhood friend Eujen/Eugen accompanying her on a visit to a wizard who's reputed to be glad to give out staffs to budding mages. On the way she falls foul off a cute water-snake goblin, from whom Eugen rescues her - but she's annoyed that she needed his help and starts an argument, then wanders off by herself, and (of course) promptly gets accosted by a tall, dark and handsome stranger. [Side note: the author interview at the end of the book explains that the title is in part due to her love of cats and in part because she wanted to have "11 bishounen" in the story; I guess I should start counting now!]

We meet more characters, including Kirik, a pointy-eared, glasses-wearing friend of Eugen's, who seems to have some hidden depths (to the degree that this story has any depths at all - so far it's pretty light). The stranger that Rika found is the Sword Master of Black Iron, which sounds dangerous, yet he seems to be a nice enough guy. And then there's the black-pearl McGuffin, which our heroes were strictly cautioned not to touch - so of course Rika touches it and invokes an adorable cat-boy magical being.

There's a dark prince too, though he's shown as being quite fair and handsome. He has custody of a lost princess, who looks like a little girl (hard to judge what age she's SUPPOSED to be). And while he makes terrible threats against anyone who comes to rescue her, he doesn't seem willing to follow through.

All in all, a pleasant enough story, with some funny bits, and with hints of connections between some of the characters. It isn't very edgy, though. If I come across later volumes - the series only ran to five - I might check 'em out just to see how things wind up.
