We were going out stealing horses. That was what he said, standing at the door to the cabin where I was spending the summer with my father. I was fifteen. It was 1948 and one of the first days of July.
Trond's friend Jon often appeared at his doorstep with an adventure in mind for the two of them. But this morning was different. What began as a joy ride on "borrowed" horses ends with Jon falling into a strange trance of grief. Trond soon learns what befell Jon earlier that day--an incident that marks the beginning of a series of vital losses for both boys.
Set in the easternmost region of Norway, Out Stealing Horses begins with an ending. Sixty-seven-year-old Trond has settled into a rustic cabin in an isolated area to live the rest of his life with a quiet deliberation. A meeting with his only neighbor, however, forces him to reflect on that fateful summer.

Australasia Wishlist Tag Game. On the tbr for reading soon and then posting to J4shaw.
This is a beautiful read that evokes a strong sense of place set in Norway with its vivid descriptions of living in isolation amongst snowy landscapes. Loved it and the writing is so good.
Australasia Wishlist tag game for J4shaw
This arrived in a pretty pink package at the local store Post Office today. The lady made mention of how I only ever seem to receive pretty packages, and not too many bills!
Thanks for Tagging me Jeniwren in the Australasia Wishlist Tag Game
I have the Author's 2nd novel In the Wake on Mt TBR to read before this one, but shouldn't be too long before I have them both moving along.

This is the 3rd book I have read by Petterson and I finally give up.
The writing just doesn't pull me in.
This story of fifteen-year-old Trond's summer in the country with interweaving tale of present day living in an isolated part of Norway did nothing for me.
Fair enough it's chilly Norwegian setting was an interesting element for me as it counts for my 666 for 2016 An Around the World Reading Challenge, but beyond that, it gave me nothing.
Doubt I'll persevere with this author.
