The Weight of Blood: A Novel
5 journalers for this copy...
For fans of Gillian Flynn and Daniel Woodrell, a dark, gripping debut novel of literary suspense about two mysterious disappearances, a generation apart, and the meaning of family-the sacrifices we make, the secrets we keep, and the lengths we will go to protect the ones we love.
The Dane family's roots tangle deep in the Ozark Mountain town of Henbane, but that doesn't keep sixteen-year-old Lucy Dane from being treated like an outsider. Folks still whisper about her mother, a bewitching young stranger who inspired local myths when she vanished years ago. When one of Lucy's few friends, slow-minded Cheri, is found murdered, Lucy feels haunted by the two lost girls-the mother she never knew and the friend she couldn't protect. Everything changes when Lucy stumbles across Cheri's necklace in an abandoned trailer and finds herself drawn into a search for answers. What Lucy discovers makes it impossible to ignore the suspicion cast on her own kin. More alarming, she suspects Cheri's death could be linked to her mother's disappearance, and the connection between the two puts Lucy at risk of losing everything. In a place where the bonds of blood weigh heavy, Lucy must decide where her allegiances lie.

A decent debut novel, if a little haphazard. The characters were interesting although there were quite a few of them, and with the perspective of the story jumping back and forth in time, it was sometimes a bit difficult to keep track of everyone. The tiny bucolic towns of the Ozarks don't seem to be the places to go to, when you want to change from city living to country - they don't sound as though they are too friendly towards strangers.

Currently reading it. :)
I really enjoyed reading this novel, which is this writer's first.
Family / blood is conveyed in two ways: the Dane brothers, who stand by each other no matter what (even covering for crime), and Lila and her daughter Lucy, who are the two narrators of the story. However, Birdie is not blood but gradually becomes a grandmotherly figure, even more supporting than blood relatives at times.
The Ozark mountains' environment is very well described; I must agree with keeta1 (and the writer, in her notes, who had first-hand experience): not the most welcoming for strangers or foreigners...
I must also agree with keeta1 (great minds think alike, LOL) that there are too many characters in two different time settings, and sometimes this is not too easy to follow...
One quote I liked:
"But I was starting to think you were one kind of person until a situation arose that required you to be something else."
Atmospheric and gripping until the end, I could not put it down and found it to be a real page-turner.
Thanks for sharing, keeta1; it was about time I read it, and it will soon travel to the hands of another lucky reader. :)
