Jance's protagonist is a female sherriff from Arizona. I like that this character, Joanna, is very well 'fleshed out' by the author. You can see the character throughout the book. Joanna is still recovering from the loss of her husband, and trying to make a life for herself and her daughter. Joanna is a strong woman, but the case she is thrown into involves an 18-year old girl who has been horribly murdered. This girl had secrets, and so do her parents. Joanna also has to deal with some problems as concerns her deputies, and where the crime scene is (as well as problems with a friend and acquaintance getting mixed up with some criminal activity by accident), ends up putting Joanna and her deputies at risk due to flash flooding that is often seen with rainstorms in the Arizona desert.
