I picked up this new manga at Barnes and Noble, after reading this review from the Manga Connoisseur. ( admit that the cover, showing the boy focused intently on constructing Mt. Fuji on top of his desk, charmed me utterly!)
Later: Very cute indeed, a kind of grade-school "Ferris Bueller" in the way that Seki manages to construct elaborate playthings on his desk during class without anyone but poor Yokoi noticing. And when she gets distracted by looking at what Seki's doing, she's the one who gets in trouble. This is the pattern for several episodes, always very cute and very funny, but it makes me wonder if we'll eventually learn why nobody else seems to notice Seki's hijincks - is a he ghost? Alien? Hallucination?
The dynamic between the two kids is a perfect depiction of the "good student" vs. the "free spirit", and reminds me of a few incidents-with-siblings when I was a kid. Seki's inventiveness also reminds me of the joys of playing around with random stuff - houses of cards, falling-domino layouts, piles of sand... Even though Seki himself seems to take all this very seriously indeed, it looks like so much FUN!
Later on, Seki interacts with other kids - though it doesn't go well, as nobody else seems to be on his wavelength. But his observer Yokoi (who's easing into stalker-territory already) is intrigued to learn that certain personality types can disrupt Seki's concentration, something she hasn't been able to do very often.
I wouldn't have thought I'd enjoy a manga with such a simple premise so very much, but I love it!
[There's a TV Tropes page for the series.]

This was an extremely cute and funny little manga. I think my favorite episodes were when Seki polished his desk to a mirrored shine and when he pulled cats out of his bag.
Thanks so much for sharing this. It was perfect for my reading mood and not something I might have picked up on my own :)

Mailed to the winner of the ninth mana/graphic novel sweeps.
Nimrodiel, thanks so much! I love it!! Lol. So funny. Does anybody else wonder if Seki is autistic? He is so smart, so creative. Yet he doesn't interact too much with his classmates. He's got a one-track mind and is so focused. Autism would explain a lot!

I went to the Kleberg-Rylie Recreation Center to drop off some flyers and got to talking with one of the staff members there about Manga. He said he found this book on a bench and had been holding it. He asked if I wanted it and I saw it was a BookCrossings book. I joined years ago, but have not participated until now. I'm excited about finding this book and getting back into the BookCrossing world! I will check in with my review later.
I forgot to do the review. I also found this to be a cute, simple little manga story about a boy who never pays attention in school, except to the wild things he constructs at his desk. He constantly distracts his good-student neighbor, who gets in trouble every time she pays too much attention to Seki.
