When a rich old lady, Mrs Gentle, comes to live in the Highlands, Hamish Macbeth quickly realises that she's actually a vicious, bullying woman. He feels sorry for her Turkish maid, Ayesha, and offers to marry her so she can escape both her father and Mrs Gentle. But Ayesha may not be what she seems, and soon Hamish is investigating two murders, while having to deal with a visiting Russian Inspector, a superior who hates him, and a complicated love life. Mild murder mystery which I enjoyed rather more than the Agatha Raisin I've read.
