Spotted in a Healthy Planet shop and could not resist picking it up.
In this novella Henry James tries to portray the predicament of all the people who forfeit their allotted share of experience, because of their excessive pride and rationality. Marcher suffers chiefly by not responding to May’s affection. This is not a thrill a minute roller-coaster rather it is a plodding, mature look at wasted lives and as such despite its brevity has hidden depths.

John Marcher has spent his whole life convinced that he is the target of some unknown doom, a beast in the jungle which will eventually hunt him down. May Bartram is the only person who knows his secret, who he can trust to take him seriously. As his confidant she's his closest friend but he doesn't want to take things further so as not to involve another in his fate. But it seems that Bartram may know more about what is in stall for Marcher than he does himself. Clever, with a lot of depth in its few brief pages.
