Felicia is unmarried, pregnant, and penniless. She steals away from a small Irish town and drifts through the industrial English Midlands, searching for the boyfriend who left her. Instead she meets up with the fat, fiftyish, unfailingly reasonable Mr. Hilditch, who is looking for a new friend to join the five other girls in his Memory Lane. But the strange, sad, terrifying tricks of chance unravel both his and Felicia's delusions in a story that will magnetize fans of Alfred Hitchcock and Ruth Rendell even as it resonates with William Trevor's own "impeccable strength and piercing profundity" (The Washington Post Book World).

A different type of book than I'm used to however I enjoyed the writing style. The character development was excellent and I got a sense for both Felicia and Mr Hilditch. It was quite predictable but this didn't take away from a good read.

Chosen from Nataliec7's "Wrap It Up" book box on the strength of it's first line "She keeps being sick". Never heard of the book - or the author for that matter - & it doesn't look like my usual sort of read but that's what this book box is all about. Maybe I'll have found a new favourite....or maybe not....watch this space..... ;o)

An intriguing read about two very different people whose paths collide. Initially I was unsure about the time period the tale was set in, expecting it to be 1950ish what with the "small town" attitude to unmarried mothers & the descriptions of Mr Hilditch's appearance, which made me visualise someone out of an Ealing film. References to 1986 brought it up to a more recent date - indeed it was written in 1994 - so maybe the fact that the views seemed very dated is a sign on how much our society has changed over the last 20-some years, whatever it certainly did a brilliant job in evoking the problem Felicia was facing. The only thing that bugged me was why on earth didn't Felicia ever consult a phone book to try locate Johnny's workplace?!

Not the sort of thing I'd normally pick up but once I'd begun I found it so compelling. A really good, well written tale with an ending I wasn't expecting - I really enjoyed it :o)

Taken from the random book box - this book has reached the Midlands, UK from Massachusetts!

Very impressive writing - precise descriptions and well drawn characters. I really felt for the innocent, naive Felicia and her hopeless situation; the clever use of her dreams gave an insight into her state of mind towards the end of the story. The writing is so good, one almost feels compassion for Mr Hilditch too, you feel his loneliness and the impact of childhood trauma. Skilful writing to elicit both distaste and pity for a character.

The journey unfolds in layers until its horrible conclusion, however the writing is subtle, there are no gratuitous shocks or violence. The horrors are only alluded to, mostly being left to the readers imagination.

I agree with Plum Crazy's review - I was initially confused about the time period the book was set in but modern references are made as the book progresses.

The standout part of this book was Trevor's depiction of the world of the homeless, outstanding writing.

This edition of the book also includes a conversation with William Trevor at the end, and questions for discussion, ideal for reading groups, essays etc.

Will release soon .... long may Felicia's journey continue.
