In the dazzling summer of 1926, Ernest Hemingway and his wife Hadley travel from their home in Paris to a villa in the south of France. They swim, play bridge and drink gin. But wherever they go they are accompanied by the glamorous and irrepressible Fife. Fife is Hadley’s best friend. She is also Ernest’s lover.

Hadley is the first Mrs. Hemingway, but neither she nor Fife will be the last. Over the ensuing decades, Ernest’s literary career will blaze a trail, but his marriages will be ignited by passion and deceit. Four extraordinary women will learn what it means to love the most famous writer of his generation, and each will be forced to ask herself how far she will go to remain his wife…

I quite enjoyed this book about the four different Mrs Hemingways. The chapters jump about a bit in time but it all makes sense as each section is narrated by a different Mrs Hemingway and then sooner or later the soon to be next Mrs Hemingway shows up. Out of all his four wives, I think I warmed to Fife most and when I had a quick google and seen her photograph, she looked quite like I had imagined. Interesting read indeed and I learned a lot about Ernest Hemingway as well.

This looks like it should be an interesting read. I don't know very much about Hemingway, so all will be revealed.

I had to stop reading this book. I couldn't stand the way Hemingway just did whatever the hell he liked with no consideration for anyone else. It also drove me mad how the women in the book fawned over him when I wanted to punch him. I just couldn't see what attracted them to him. For me it was like those situations where people supposedly have an open relationship, but what it often means is that one person is very unhappy and puts up with a lot of crap so that the other person doesn't leave them. Grrr.

I really enjoyed the style of this one but like bookfrogster by wife 3 I was thinking surely not what are you doing!? It made me curious enough to google Ernest and his wives and what happened next for them all. As a result Mary's section feels a bit light given what actually happened to them both in the later years.

Reserved for soozreader as part of Wishlist Tag.

I thought this book was really interesting and though it is a work of fiction I still think I learned a lot about the people in it. I liked the fact that Ernest Hemingway was somehow only a supporting character (though a destructive one) in this book. And that the narrator’s voice was only given to his wives.
